The best chair lift to buy is the one that matches your mobility needs. Various powered upgrades will make the lift easier to operate for the user. An OT will make these recommendations if required.

Which is better Handicare or Acorn stairlift?

We find both Handicare and Acorn to be reliable and long-lasting stairlifts. We recommend both to our clients. Different models offer different options and this is usually the deciding factor.

Is there an alternative to a stair lift?

There are a few stair lift alternatives on the market. Some can be used alone whilst others will require assistance. Able Plus does not sell any of these alternatives at moment.

What is the cheapest stairlift?

The cheapest stairlift is a free stairlift that’s gifted to you. It’s possible to move stairlifts to a new staircase. Straights lifts are much easier to move. Curved stairlift rails are bespoke and need a new bespoke rail system.

Can stairlifts be fitted to any stairs?

It is fair to say there are stairlifts available for nearly every staircase. We supply slim stairlifts, curved stairlift and lifts that allow for unobstructed access to doorways that intersect the bottom of the staircase. With that being said there is a very small chance that your staircase in unsuitable for a stairlift. Our team can tell you if this is the case over the phone or with a site survey if needs be.

Are stairlifts a fire risk?

Stairlifts are a mature technology, the first stairlift was used in the 1930s! As such the risk of fire from a stairlift is no more than any other electrical appliance. As long a due care is taken there is practically no chance of an electrical fire resulting from a stairlift.

Are stairlifts expensive?

Straight stairlifts are relatively affordable and curved stairlifts are generally considered to be expensive as the curved rail is custom engineered to match each stairs. We offer higher purchase on all of our stairlifts to help you to spread the cost.

Are stairlifts battery powered?

Most stairlifts are battery powered nowadays, this is usually a safety feature as it means if the power goes the lift is still usable for up to 24 hours.

Are stairlifts handed?

Most (but not all) stairlifts that are available in Ireland come handed from the manufacturer. This means the lift will only be suitable for the righthand side or the lefthand side of the stairs. The majority of straight stairlifts will travel on the wall side of the stairs (with the stairlift user facing the bannisters). There are exceptions. We offer a couple of non-handed stairlift models that allow for further customisation.

Are stairlifts safe?

Stairlifts are subject to the most stringent of safety standards in the E.U. & U.K (and worldwide). Any new stairlift that you buy will meet these high standards.

Are stairlifts vat exempt?

In Ireland new stairlifts are not VAT exempt exactly, you do have to pay the VAT when you purchase, but the VAT may be redeemable for private individuals. Secondhand lifts do not qualify for VAT reclamation.

How much is it to rent a stairlift?

Rental stairlifts are a quick, affordable and easy way to try a stairlift with no long term commitment.

Rental fees are €100 per month with a minimum rental period of three months.

There is also a one-off fee €350 that covers installation and removal. These prices exclude VAT.

Why will the seat and footrest on a stairlift not stay down?

This is an unusual and rare occurrence in a stairlift. This issue might happen if the springs have become faulty over time, or there may be an issue with the PCB boards in the stairlift. Our engineers can usually diagnose such problems over the phone, and with no cost to you.

Who qualifies for a stairlift grant?

In order to apply for a grant for your new stairlift you will need to contact your local authority to see if you qualify. Our page on stairlift grant applications has links to all different authorities websites (linking to the relevant pages). They will be happy to get your application underway and can advise if you qualify for funding or not.

Who makes stair lifts in Ireland?

Ireland does not have any companies manufacturing stairlifts within the state. The majority of stairlifts available in Ireland are manufactured in the UK, EU or the USA.

Do you need to visit my home to supply a quote for a stairlift?

We can supply a firm quote for a stairlift by email. We can cover all the details over the phone or you can email us photos of the stairs (or send them to us by Whatsapp).

If you have an OT report we would request that you send a copy to us by email or post in advance of us sending you your quote. You can even take photos of the report with your phone to send us.

Can you send me a brochure about stairlifts?

We are happy to post out brochures on all of our stairlifts. We can also bring them if we need to pay a visit to survey your stairs.

Can you supply a quote without a OT report?

We can supply a quote based on your stairs and what features may suit your mobility levels. An OT will make recommendations about what features you may need in the longer term.

Why is my chairlift beeping?

If your stairlift is emitting a persistent beeping noise it is probably due to one of these factors: the stairlift could be unplugged at the mains, the battery may be empty, the armrests may not be fully down or the seat may not be locked in place. Can anyone install a stairlift?

Stairlifts must be installed by trained installers or your house insurance may be invalidated.

Are stairlifts noisy?

Most stairlifts on the market are very quiet. Your stairlift should be serviced once a year to ensure optimum operation.

Will a stairlift fit a narrow staircase?

Most stairlift manufacturers offer a slimline version of their stairlifts. These are designed to fit unusually narrow stairs.

Do I have to pay for a quote?

We do not apply any sort of charge for quotations. We are happy to supply a quote over the phone, by email or we can visit you.

Can other people use the staircase when a stairlift is installed?

All stairlifts are designed in such a way that safe access to the stairs is always possible for other people. All stairlifts comes with two remote controls, this allows safe parking of the lift at both the top and the bottom of the stairs.

How long will a stairlift last?

A well maintained stairlift should last 10-12 years. Typically an annual service will keep your stairlift in optimum condition and operating safely for the maximum possible time. If a stairlift is not properly maintained it is unlikely to work properly for more than five years.

Does fitting a stairlift cause a mess?

Stairlift installation is not a messy process. Stairlifts are installed on top of existing floor coverings such as carpet or wood. We hoover any dust afterwards and remove any waste.

How long does it take to install a stairlift?

Installing a straight stairlift takes 2-5 hours depending on the model.

A curved stairlift can take from 4-8 hours. The lead time on a curved stairlift is 10-21 days from date of survey. Every curved stairlift rail is custom made per staircase.

What is a stairlift?

Do you supply reconditioned stairlifts?

Reconditioned stairlifts are available. They typically cost about 50% of the new price for a straight stairlift. A reconditioned curved stairlift usually costs about 75% of the cost of a new curved stairlift. It is important to buy a used stairlift from a reputable stairlift dealer that has been trained by the manufacturer of that model of stairlift; for safety and insurance reasons.

How do I change my carpet after a stairlift is installed?

We recommend, if you are considering changing your carpet in the near future, you do so before having your stairlift installed. The stairlift is installed on the stairs and downstairs landing area, on top of any floor coverings.

If you have a stairlift installed and want to change your carpet on the stairs, we can remove the stairlift for a day to allow this to happen. Call us on 01-8245763 for advice on stairlift removal and relocation.

Will a stairlift keep working during a powercut?

In the event of a power cut your stairlift will continue to function as it has backup batteries. This should be enough to use your stairlift a few times a day for at least 48 hours. Once the power is back the batteries will recharge.

The quality of aftercare and other factors should be considered along with the price of your new stairlift: is the company insured. Are they going to charge me a lot for services and repairs. A stairlift that is well looked after can last many years. Like a car there are costs associated with  keeping a stairlift in optimum condition. These potential costs should be discussed before you buy a stairlift.

Do I need a stairlift?

A stairlift can be a necessity or a useful addition, depending on the situation.

Stairlifts are great for people who want to continue to live in their home as they age, without making too many modifications. The benefits in this case include a quick and clean installation (no major building work or structural modifications). No need to move a bedroom downstairs or install a bathroom downstairs.

What types of stairlift are available?

Stairlifts come in a variety of options.

An outdoor stairlift is weather proofed and engineered to withstand the elements.
